Useful Quotes from 1984

From Part 2, Chapter 5

In a way, the world-view of the Party imposed itself most successfully on people incapable of understanding it. They could be made to accept the most flagrant violations of reality, because they never fully grasped the enormity of what was demanded of them, and were not sufficiently interested in public events to notice what was happening. By lack of understanding they remained sane. They simply swallowed everything, and what they swallowed did them no harm, because it left no residue behind, just as a grain of corn will pass undigested through the body of a bird.

From Part 3, Chapter 2

The beatings grew less frequent, and became mainly a threat, a horror to which he could be sent back at any moment when his answers were unsatisfactory. His questioners now were not ruffians in black uniforms but Party intellectuals, little rotund men with quick movements and flashing spectacles, who worked on him in relays over periods which lasted — he thought, he could not be sure — ten or twelve hours at a stretch. These other questioners saw to it that he was in constant slight pain, but it was not chiefly pain that they relied on. They slapped his face, wrung his ears, pulled his hair, made him stand on one leg, refused him leave to urinate, shone glaring lights in his face until his eyes ran with water; but the aim of this was simply to humiliate him and destroy his power of arguing and reasoning. Their real weapon was the merciless questioning that went on and on, hour after hour, tripping him up, laying traps for him, twisting everything that he said, convicting him at every step of lies and self-contradiction until he began weeping as much from shame as from nervous fatigue.

From Part 3, Chapter 3
‘The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently. We are different from all the oligarchies of the past, in that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards and hypocrites. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just round the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that. We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means, it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now do you begin to understand me?’

  2. [...] is a very Orwellian organization, the closest thing I could think of being the Ministry of Love featured in his epic novel 1984 (or Miniluv in Newspeak, that NOM obviously advocates for). The morons of the religious right love [...]

  3. I could not find out where I could send a personal letter to Michael Petit so I hope it can get to him through here.

I am hoping to bring to attention things that are very relevant to the issue of child abuse continuing and getting worse. I do not think the Law Enforcement and Legal Profession are without blame, with their myriad and conflicting rules, laws and interpretation and not applying existing law to the benefit of the SITUATIONs of individuals involved. I wanted to bring this to Baracks attention after the issue of Health Care Reform was effectively handled. It appears this is the cart before the horse, but there is so much that needs to be handled in a better way on all levels and we do not need the distractions of those who don’t want reform that people are dying over because the people who could do it have their hands tied by lobbies and just individuals wanting to cause havoc in our country. It is not a one size all thing. Cases are all different. You always here that the poor social worker have caseloads that are too heavy to handle all the cases. What if it is just the frustration in dealing with a system that does not back up their efforts?
A system that does not opperate correctly. All the social workers in the world can’t do their job with a system that puts the wrong people behind bars and lets others run free to continue to abuse ALL and many victims being children. The courts are wasting time on trivial cases here in New Hampshire. Also a man who was convicted of faking his disappearance after an accident and continued to have mental issues from prison could have been having these issues because of the way his case was handled in court. Nobody considered the possibility that his man could have been suffering from a rare form of amnesia called dissasociative fugue and truly not known himself what happened to him. Examples could go on and on about things that happen in our state to contribute to an atmosphere causing stress that could lead to child abuse. I know I am using the wrong site but this is so important. Carol Saufley
